Low Poly Animation
How is our electricity generated?
01. Background
This German animation is part of a series of educational videos commissioned by the State of Bavaria (Germany) for 5th and 6th grade students. The series covers various topics in science and civics, designed to make complex subjects accessible to young audiences.
We partnered with voice actors known for their work in popular television shows and anime, so that students would recognize familiar voices and stay engaged with the content.
02. Challenge
The client did not provide the content. We were responsible for all research, writing, and fact verification. The brief required complete neutrality. Each energy source had to be presented with its advantages and disadvantages without favoring any particular position on energy policy. This meant balancing accuracy with accessibility, and information with impartiality.
03. Approach
Explaining technical content like power generation to 10 and 11 year olds requires distilling information without losing accuracy. The visual design has to support understanding without distraction.
The low poly animation style, the pacing, and the structure of the narration are grounded in research on educational media. Mayer's Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning demonstrates that people learn better from words and pictures combined than from words alone. Cognitive load research shows that simplified visual designs reduce mental effort while processing complex information, allowing learners to focus on the content rather than decoding the visuals.
