Context

Neumorphism combines the flat aesthetic of modern interfaces with soft shadows that simulate physical depth. Elements appear extruded from or pressed into the background rather than floating above it. The effect relies on precise shadow placement: a light source from one direction casts both a highlight and a shadow on opposite edges of each element.

The style has limited practical application. The subtle contrast makes it difficult to establish clear visual hierarchy, and accessibility suffers because interactive elements do not stand out from non-interactive surfaces. Most clients avoid it for these reasons.

No project has ever required me to design in this style, which made it a good candidate for a personal experiment. I made this music app concept to understand the technical constraints firsthand: how to balance shadow intensity, how to indicate button states when everything already appears raised or recessed, and how color introduces complexity into a system that depends on monochromatic gradients.
